Mounjaro® and Wegovy® are both injectable medications used for weight management, but they have some key differences.
Wegovy® is specifically approved for weight loss in the UK for certain overweight or obese adults, while Mounjaro® which had previously been used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, was approved for the use of weight loss in the UK in November 2023.
Both medications work by affecting hormones that regulate appetite and blood sugar, but they do it in slightly different ways. Wegovy® targets one specific hormone receptor, GLP-1, while Mounjaro® targets both GLP-1 and GIP receptors. Studies suggest that Mounjaro® might lead to slightly greater weight loss than Wegovy®, typically around 8% more.
They also have different dosage structure and may cause slightly different side effects.
Mounjaro and Ozempic are both injectable medications used for weight loss and diabetes management, but they have some key differences. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which acts on both the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, while Ozempic contains semaglutide, which only acts on the GLP-1 receptor. This difference in mechanism of action may account for Mounjaro’s greater effectiveness for weight loss compared to Ozempic, as seen in clinical trials.
Mounjaro has also been approved specifically for weight loss, while Ozempic is primarily approved for type 2 diabetes. However, Ozempic can be prescribed off-label for weight loss in some cases.
