How Does Mounjaro Work? Dr Emma McKay Explains

Here at Cosmetic Perfection, we’ve been getting questions about the popular Mounjaro® drug, so I wanted to take a moment to explain, in simple terms, how this medication actually works and how it might be a helpful tool on your weight loss journey.

Think of your body as having a few key messengers that talk to each other about things like hunger and blood sugar. Mounjaro is pretty clever because it actually mimics the actions of two of these natural messengers, called GLP-1 and GIP.

Weight Loss Wirral Mounjaro Ozempic

What are GLP-1 and GIP, and what do they normally do?

Imagine GLP-1 as a signal that your gut releases when you eat. It does a few really helpful things:

  • It tells your stomach to slow down. This means food stays in your stomach for a bit longer, which can help you feel fuller for longer after eating. That constant urge to snack might just quieten down.
  • It nudges your pancreas to release insulin when your blood sugar is high. Insulin is the key that helps sugar move from your bloodstream into your cells for energy. This helps keep your blood sugar levels more stable.
  • It can even send signals to your brain that you’re satisfied. This can naturally reduce your appetite and make you less likely to overeat.

Now, let’s talk about GIP. It works in a slightly different but complementary way:

  • It encourages your pancreas to release insulin after you eat. So, it teams up with GLP-1 to help manage blood sugar.
  • Interestingly, GIP can also have an effect on fat storage. While the exact way it works for weight loss is still being fully understood, it seems to play a role in how your body uses and stores energy.

So, how does Mounjaro step in?

Mounjaro is a single injection that you take once a week, just as with Ozempic / Wegovy. It contains a medication called tirzepatide, which is designed to act like both GLP-1 and GIP. By mimicking these two natural hormones, Mounjaro can offer several benefits for weight loss:

  • Reduced appetite: By slowing down stomach emptying and signaling fullness to your brain, Mounjaro can help you feel less hungry throughout the day. This can make it easier to eat smaller portions and make healthier food choices.
  • Improved blood sugar control: Just like the natural hormones, Mounjaro helps your body release insulin when your blood sugar is high. This is particularly beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes, but it can also contribute to overall metabolic health for those focused on weight loss.
  • Potentially increased fat burning: While more research is ongoing, the way Mounjaro interacts with both GLP-1 and GIP suggests it might also influence how your body stores and uses fat.

What does this mean for you if you’re trying to lose weight?

Essentially, Mounjaro can be a powerful tool to help you manage your weight by tackling some of the underlying biological factors that can make weight loss challenging, like persistent hunger and blood sugar fluctuations.

I speak from experience, as I myself am proud of my weight loss journey and the results I have achieved.

Mounjaro is not a magic bullet, of course. It works best when combined with healthy lifestyle changes, like a balanced diet and regular physical activity. This is what we emphasise at Cosmetic Perfection in Wirral – as safety and wellbeing is paramount to us.
